Panthers Sign TE Olsen to Extension

The Carolina Panthers have signed tight end Greg Olsen to a three-year contract extension that will keep him with the club through the 2018 season, the team announced Friday.

In 2014, Olsen earned his first Pro Bowl selection after setting team records for the most catches and receiving yards in a season by a tight end. He finished the regular season third among all NFL tight ends with a team-leading 84 receptions, second with career-high 1,008 receiving yards and tied for seventh with six receiving touchdowns. Additionally, Olsen set a team record for the most 100-yard receiving games in a season by a tight end with three and twice produced a career-high 10 catches, tying Carolina’s single-game record for a tight end.

Olsen’s six touchdown catches in 2014 make him the only NFL tight end with five or more touchdowns in every season since 2008. He also owns the top three single-season reception totals and three of the top four single-season receiving yards totals by a tight end in team history. Last season marked the sixth time in the past seven seasons that Olsen registered at least 500 yards receiving and his third consecutive with at least 800. It was also the fifth 50-catch season of his career.

Acquired in a trade by Carolina from Chicago in exchange for a 2012 third-round draft choice at the start of training camp in 2011, Olsen was originally a first-round choice (31st overall) by the Bears in 2007. Since entering the NFL, Olsen ranks among the top 10 players at his position in receptions (fourth – 465), receiving yards (fifth – 5,188) and receiving touchdowns (seventh – 42). He has played in 126 consecutive regular season games, the second-longest streak among active tight ends behind Dallas’ Jason Witten (187), after missing the first two games of his rookie season with a knee injury.
