Panthers Sign Free Agent WR Ted Ginn, Jr.

The Carolina Panthers have signed free agent wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr., to a two-year contract, the team announced Monday.

“To be able to come back here is amazing,” Ginn said. “It’s a blessing to have a family like this that is willing to give me another opportunity to be on their ball club.”

Ginn, 5-11 and 185 pounds, returns to Carolina for his second stint after playing for the Panthers in 2013. Ginn rejoins Carolina after spending 2014 with the Arizona Cardinals. Ginn ranked fourth in the NFC with a 10.7-yard punt return average (26 returns for 277 yards and one touchdown) in 2014, marking the fifth consecutive season in which he has ranked fifth or higher in the NFC in punt return average. With Arizona, Ginn added 14 receptions for 190 yards and returned 22 kickoffs for 417 yards.

“We are very pleased to have Ted back,” general manager Dave Gettleman said. “He gives us big play ability as a punt returner and a wide receiver. He still has his speed. He can still fly.”

In 2013 with Carolina, Ginn recorded 36 catches for 556 yards and a career-high five receiving touchdowns. Ginn’s 12.2-yard punt return average (26 returns for 316 yards) in 2013, is a Panthers’ franchise record and ranked fourth in the NFC.

A veteran of eight NFL seasons, Ginn has previously played for Miami (2007-09), San Francisco (2010-12), Carolina (2013) and Arizona (2014). Ginn entered the NFL in 2007 as a first round draft choice (ninth overall) of the Miami Dolphins out of Ohio State. For his career, Ginn has totaled 211 receptions for 2,794 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has returned 281 kickoffs for 6,443 yards for a 22.9-yard average with three touchdowns. Has returned 182 punt returns for 2,018 yards for an 11.1-yard average with four touchdowns. The 11.1-yard career average ranks fourth among active NFL players. Since entering the NFL in 2007, Ginn’s 8,461 combined kickoff return yards rank fifth among active NFL players.
