Light Rail Fatality

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Unit are conducting an investigation into a fatal light rail crash.

On Friday, November 6, 2015, at 2:38 a.m., a victim was found to be deceased on the right side of the southbound light rail track, just south of the Archdale Drive station.  The injuries appeared to be consistent with the victim being struck by a light rail train.

During the course of the investigation, it was found that the victim walked onto the light rail track from the Archdale Drive platform.  A few minutes later, LYNX Light Rail Train #10, that was operated by LYNX Light Rail Operator Florence Howard, was traveling south and came to a stop at the Archdale Drive station.  The train then came out of the station and struck the victim, who was laying down on the southbound tracks.  The LYNX Light Rail operator did not see the victim in the tracks or know that she had struck the victim.

The victim was pronounced deceased at the crash scene at 2:50 a.m.

This crash is under investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.  Any witnesses are being asked to call Detective Kevin Allred at (704) 432-2169.
