In light of the recent crime increase, Edwin Peacock has announced a crime reduction initiative.
“The most basic function of Charlotte government is keeping our citizens safe,” said Peacock. “We’ve seen crime increase dramatically this year, and our leadership has been silent.”
Today, peacock announced his plan to combat crime in Charlotte by creating a task force, on day one, to create the “Citizen Commission on Crime Reduction.” The commission will be tasked with:
1- Increasing accountability measures, including a crime stats portal
2- Gang-related crime reduction
3- Drug and narcotics reduction
4- Combatting human trafficking
“As mayor, I will ask our task force to provide me with a comprehensive report in the first 100 days of my administration,” Peacock said.
Peacock is emphasizing the need for the Charlotte City Council Community Safety Committee to focus more on crime fighting and prevention subjects. The important, but NOT urgent subjects, like food truck, noise, and bow hunting ordinances, before the committee over the last 5 years must be appropriately prioritized.
“Those issues become far less important to the public when murder rates spike and people are losing their lives,” said Peacock. “We need to refocus our priorities and be proactive to keep our streets safe.”
Charlotte has already seen more murders this year than in all of 2014 and currently ranks 6th in the nation in human trafficking. Peacock is proposing a crime reduction plan that ensures Charlotte’s government takes a proactive stance to meet the growing challenges our communities and police face.
Peacock is proposing to refocus on the Gang of One program and similar efforts, as well as emphasize faith-based programs to connect with youth and substantively address the growing gang problem in Charlotte.
“My goal is to make Charlotte the most family and business friendly city in America. That starts with making sure our citizens feel safe in their own neighborhoods,” said Peacock.
For four years on City Council, Edwin Peacock was a member of the Community Safety Committee.
