Governor Pat McCrory, North Carolina Commerce Secretary John E. Skvarla III, and the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC) announced today that PayPal Inc. will open a Global Operations Center in Charlotte, creating 400 new jobs and investing $3.6 million by the end of 2017. Headquartered in San Jose, PayPal Inc. is an industry leader in the technology platform and the digital payments sector. The company is publicly traded (NASDAQ: PYPL).
“North Carolina is the ideal destination for innovation-based, worldwide companies like PayPal,” said Governor McCrory. “Today’s announcement means that we can add another prominent name to the state’s growing list of technology businesses with major operations here.”
Founded in 1998, PayPal currently has 179 million active customer accounts that use the PayPal digital and mobile payments platform. Its technology enables people and businesses to make secure transactions with each other online, in person and via mobile device. PayPal’s global platform allows customers to get paid in more than 100 currencies. The company reported $9.2 billion in revenue for 2015.
“We are excited and eager to join the Charlotte business community,” said John McCabe, senior vice president of Global Operations at PayPal. “With its strong ties to the financial community and technology savvy talent pool, Charlotte is an ideal fit for this new operations center. This new site marks an exciting opportunity for PayPal as we continue to serve our customers, both merchants and consumers, and support them in using PayPal as a payments platform to shop, sell, send money or even donate to worthy causes.”
New positions at the operations center will include customer service, risk operations, engineering and technology and other staff. Wages will vary by position. The center will yield an annual payroll impact of nearly $20.4 million for Mecklenburg and surrounding counties.
“The Charlotte Chamber welcomes PayPal to the region’s rapidly rising financial tech sector,” said Bob Morgan, president and CEO of the Charlotte Chamber. “The company’s nationally known brand and respect in the marketplace further enhances Charlotte’s reputation as a top city for tech talent.”
The Charlotte Chamber would like to thank Gov. Pat McCrory, Commerce Secretary John Skvarla, North Carolina Department of Commerce, Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, North Carolina Community College System, City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County for their contributions to this very important project.
