Panthers Sign Jairus Byrd; Place Damiere Byrd on IR

The Carolina Panthers have signed free agent safety Jairus Byrd and placed wide receiver Damiere Byrd on injured reserve, the team announced Tuesday.

Jairus (pronounced Jair-iss) Byrd, 5-10 and 205 pounds, is a veteran of eight NFL seasons, his first five with Buffalo (2009-13) and next three (2014-16) with New Orleans, Byrd has appeared in 106 career games with 98 starts, posting totals of 546 tackles, four sacks, 25 interceptions, 40 passes defensed, 14 forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.

Byrd is a three-time Pro Bowl selection, earning the honors with Buffalo in 2009, 2012 and 2013. He was an Associated Press second-team All-Pro in 2012 and 2013.

With New Orleans in 2016, Byrd started 15-of-16 contests, recording 96 tackles, two interceptions and two passes defensed.

Byrd was a second round draft choice (42nd overall) of the Buffalo Bills in 2009 out of the University of Oregon.
