MLK Holiday Parade Top Performance Showcase Winners

The brisk weather on Saturday, January 18, did not deter spectators from attending Charlotte’s annual MLK Holiday Parade. The crowd, estimated at 30,000 people, cheered the 100-plus units that marched down Tryon Street as part of the city’s celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Highlights of the parade were appearances by Amanda McCoy, the 2013 Miss Black USA, and parade co-Grand Marshals Mayor Patrick D. Cannon and NASCAR’s Camping World Series driver Darrell “Bubba” Wallace, Jr.

Each year, Top Performance Showcase Winners are selected from among the parade participants. The judges for the 2014 parade were marching band professionals Jeff Cobbs and Darin Morrow, WBAV/WPEG operations manager and program director Terri Avery, and Radio One assistant program director and on-air personality Olympia D.

“We want to thank our sponsors, Coca Cola Bottling Company, Food Lion, Snyders-Lance, Piedmont Natural Gas and Wells Fargo, for providing funding for the prizes awarded to showcase winners,” said Cherise B. Johnson, City of Charlotte MLK Holiday Parade Committee Chair. “We encourage high quality, creativity and relevance to Dr. King among our participating groups and we are excited to recognize and congratulate this year’s top performers.”
