Charlotte based Headlines Barber Shop partnered with Legal Services of Southern Piedmont (LSSP) to provide on-site assistance for individuals interested in signing up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.  Every Friday during the enrollment period, there was an LSSP representative stationed at Headlines Barber Shop.  In total, 50% of all of the appointments resulted in enrollments.  Here are just a few of the individual success stories:

• Miriam who had worked for the same company for 14 years was recently laid off.  She was able to receive coverage for free.
• Tonnette and her son got coverage for $19.21 per month with a $0 deductible.  The will pay no copay to see their primary care physician.
• Jeff and his family got covered for $60.81 per month and they were even able to keep their current primary care physician.
• Aledia received coverage for free and a $15 copay for office visits.  This included her expensive diabetes medication.

Headlines owner, Derrick Bennett, thought it was important to have this service available at the barber shop.  “Every person should be able to see a doctor without fearing the bill because they don’t have insurance.  I wanted people to feel free to ask questions in an environment where they felt comfortable” said Bennett.

Open enrollment for the ACA, also known as “Obama Care”, ran from November 15, 2014 through February 15,^, 2015.  Free, one on one appointments with a healthcare navigator were available at Headlines Barber Shop.
