Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit have charged Charlotte Mecklenburg School Police Officer William Stitt, DOB: 9/12/1953, with Indecent Liberties with A Minor.
The charges stem from a criminal investigation which began on Monday, August 10, 2015and revealed that Stitt inappropriately touched and fondled a known victim on August 7, 2015. The victim in this case was not someone that Stitt would have come into contact with during the scope of his employment.
On Tuesday, August 11, 2015, detectives signed a warrant for the arrest of William Stitt. Earlier this evening the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested William Stitt without incident. He is currently at police headquarters where he is being interviewed by Crimes Against Children Unit Detectives. At the conclusion of the interview he will be transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
William Stitt was hired as a CMS Police Officer on August 1, 2005. Due to the seriousness of the charges, CMS has placed Stitt on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal charges.
Stitt is a former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer. He was hired by the department on September 28, 1977 and retired on July 1, 2005.
