Reported Armed Subjects at Charlotte Area School Incident

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Freedom Division, in conjunction with Charlotte Mecklenburg School Police, is conducting an investigation into two armed subjects that were located on the Charlotte Mecklenburg School’s Thomasboro Elementary campus, located at 1211 Saratoga Drive.

At approximately 1:00 p.m. today, Friday, January 23, 2015, Freedom Division patrol officers responded to the Thomasboro Elementary campus in reference to a call for service stating that two males, one armed with a gun, were on Saratoga Drive heading towards the school campus.

A responding CMS Police Officer observed two subjects matching the suspect descriptions listed in the call for service on the school’s property. The officer then observed one of the subjects toss a gun, at which time he ordered both subjects to lay down on the ground at gunpoint. Officers from the Freedom Division quickly arrived on scene and assisted in locating the gun, which was determined to be a BB gun (please see the attached photograph of the seized BB gun).

One of the subjects, a 14 year old male who was in possession of the BB gun, will be charged with Possession of Weapon on School Property. The second individual will not be charged. Both subjects are students at Thomasboro Elementary School.

No one was injured during the course of the investigation. Responding officers demonstrated a great level of restraint when detaining the individuals. The Thomasboro Elementary School was not in session due to a teacher work day and no students were on campus.

Thanks to an alert citizen working in the area that immediately contacted police, these individuals were quick identified and apprehended by officers.
