Panthers Sign CB Captain Munnerlyn

The Carolina Panthers have signed unrestricted free agent cornerback Captain Munnerlyn to a four-year contract, the team announced Saturday.

Munnerlyn, 5-9 and 195 pounds, returns to the Panthers after spending the past three seasons (2014-16) with Minnesota. Munnerlyn began his career with the Panthers, playing five seasons (2009-13) with the team after being selected in the seventh round (216th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft out of the University of South Carolina. Munnerlyn holds the Panthers career interception return touchdowns record with five and is tied for the club single-season record with two, a feat he achieved in 2012 and in 2013. He is the only Panther to have multiple interception return touchdowns in a season twice.

In 2016, Munnerlyn played in 15 games with nine starts for Minnesota. He recorded 38 tackles, one forced fumble and three passes defensed.

In eight NFL seasons, Munnerlyn has played in 124 career regular season games with 80 starts. He has totaled 363 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 11 interceptions – including five returned for touchdowns – 55 passes defensed, six forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.
