Mo Williams Named Eastern Conference Player Of The Week

The NBA announced today that Charlotte Hornets guard Mo Williams has been named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, March 2 through Sunday, March 8.  Williams, who led the Hornets to the NBA’s only 4-0 record in the week, was previously named Western Conference Player of the Week on Jan. 19 while playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves, making him the first player to earn the honor in both conferences in the same season since the award was split into two conferences starting with the 2001-02 season.

Williams averaged 19.5 points and 10.8 assists in 35.5 minutes played for the week, while shooting .429 from the field (24-56), .375 from beyond the three-point line (9-24) and .913 from the free-throw line (21-23).  The only Eastern Conference player to average double figures in assists, he also posted an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.78.  He had at least 13 assists in two consecutive games on Tuesday and Wednesday, becoming just the fifth player in Charlotte NBA history to do so, and along with his game on Sunday, March 1, he posted just the 16th streak in Charlotte NBA history of at least three straight points-assists double-doubles.

Williams, who was acquired by the Hornets on Feb. 10, has scored in double figures in each of his nine games played for Charlotte, scoring 20 points or more seven times.  Since donning a Hornets uniform for the first time on Feb. 21, he is averaging 21.7 points and 8.7 assists, which rank 10th and sixth in the NBA, respectively, over that span.  His four points-assists double-doubles are tied for the most in the Eastern Conference during the stretch.

The award is the third of Williams’ career.  Along with his honor earlier this season in Minnesota, he was also named Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Dec. 24, 2006 while playing for the Milwaukee Bucks.
