Panthers Place Centers Kalil & Gradkowski On IR

The Carolina Panthers placed centers Ryan Kalil (shoulder) and Gino Gradkowski (knee) on injured reserve, signed free agent center Ryan Wendell and signed tackle Dan France from the Cleveland practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Wendell, 6-2 and 300 pounds, played seven seasons with New England from 2009-15, starting 49 of 79 career regular season games, including all 16 in 2012 and 2013. He also started seven of 12 postseason contests in his career. He entered the NFL in 2008 with New England as an undrafted free agent from Fresno State and was a member of the Patriots practice squad that season.

France, 6-6 and 315 pounds, entered the NFL in 2014 with Cincinnati as an undrafted rookie free agent from Michigan State. He was a member of the Cincinnati practice squad in 2014 and 2015 before joining Cleveland’s practice squad at the end of 2015.

Kalil, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, started all eight games he played this season, but missed three games with the shoulder injury.

Gradkowski, a fifth-year player who was signed as a free agent this offseason, played in 10 games, starting three in place of Kalil.

The Panthers also signed offensive tackles Tyrus Thompson and Jake Rodgers to the practice squad. Thompson was a sixth-round draft choice of Minnesota in 2015. He was in training camp this season with New Orleans. Rodgers was selected in the seventh round of the 2015 Draft by Atlanta. He was at training camp this season with the New York Giants.
